There seems to be general agreement that wonder boy Brazilian footballer Neymar tried it on during the match against Costa Rica, but because Brazil scored two late goals everybody seems to have forgotten the moment or forgiven the actor. It was a pitiful scene as the footballer fell over backwards with his arms spread out and his mouth making an exaggeratedly surprised “Oh!”......but between you and me I was convinced he’d been fouled and so it seems was the referee. Further scrutiny on the replay-screen made all the difference.
Ever since Maradona achieved universal fame and acclaim for handballing a ball into the back of the opponents’ net and getting away with it, actions of the sort Maradona became famous for and Neymar wanted to become famous for are pardoned – I suppose because the last thing we want is moralistic football. (Or, indeed, is it the first thing we really want?!) However you see it, footballers are famed for playing the beautiful game beautifully and if they try it on, well, why not?
Did anyone notice Neymar telling the referee not to touch him? “Don’t you dare touch me!” or words to that effect. No? Well, watch the aftermath again. Some minutes later the ref touches the great guy and is told to keep away. Neymar was irritated if not angry. And rightly so. He’d been shown to be an imposter. By who? That ref, that replay- screen. He hadn’t gotten away with it so he couldn’t claim to be knavishly superior to the match officials. If he was angry about it, and I believe he was, it just shows the stuff of Neymar.
Hey, guys and gals, there are videos of other footballers (probably outside the pro ranks) felling refs with punches, pushing them over. There’s even a video of a whole team chasing a ref. In the world of football refereeing can be tricky especially if you make controversial decisions, but not in the world cup and not with Neymar. He was just furious at being shown up.
My opinion only.
And yours?
