Crash Helmets Still Forbidden In Cambodia

Cross the border at Hat Lek and take a look. There’s definitely an allergy to crash helmets just over the border. Get to Koh Kong and you’ll see they love their motorbikes but hate their crash helmets. I managed to photograph many stalwarts rushing around with noddles unprotected. You can find four of them (and more) on the same motorbike, tearing along, toddlers to pensioners, all unprotected. Not that I’m saying the Thais love those fiberglass hats but it does seem a few more are worn in Thailand. I’m all for freedom, but you can’t have that much freedom if you crunch your head on stone at twenty, thirty, forty kilometers an hour. Indeed, just lift a head (a baby’s will do) and you’ll immediately understand it’s heavy…so when an accident gets you and you find yourself flying through the air, the head tends to lower towards the pavement fast. Accident-dynamics will reveal it better than me, so if in doubt take a look at a few YouTube incidents to do with accidents.

I did see some crash helmets in Sihanoukville but Kampot turned out much the same as Koh Kong.

Therefore, throw away that crash helmet before biking in Cambodia. You have nothing to lose but your life!
